It’s unfamiliar territory but the final is out of reach for Kooyong’s women this season although they can salvage something from the competition with a win this Friday night at home.
The Kooyong super round provides an opportunity for the side to reach the playoff for third spot and a win over Frankston would guarantee that happens.
Despite missing rising star Destanee Aiava for the entire season, the Kooyong women have fought gallantly in their matches despite being outgunned by both Bayside and MCC and a little unlucky against Mornington.
Their one win came against the bottom side Waverley but this week they can turn their fortunes around and finish on a high.
The first round saw the side go down swinging against the powerful Bayside team as Sally Peers upset Daria Gavrilova and Annabelle Andrinopoulos won the first set against Storm Sanders before her opponent retired injured.
Going into the doubles two matches all was a great result but unfortunately Bayside showed their depth to win both matches to take the match 4 rubbers to 2.
The second round in Yarrawonga was a return to the winners circle as the side dominated Waverley to win 6 rubbers to love and get the ship back on track.
The weekend just gone proved to be a missed opportunity as the Kooyong women dropped a match they were expected to win against Mornington before they lost to the second placed MCC in round four.
Members are invited to come down and support some of the best women’s players in Australia and from overseas as they play in the super round this Friday at Kooyong from 6.30pm.
Come down and see Grand Slam winner Cara Black, Kooyong’s US Open Junior Girl’s runner up Anett Kontaveit, former junior world number 1 Daria Gavrilova, Fed Cup representatives Sally Peers and Storm Sanders as well as former Australian star Nicole Pratt in action.
